It has always been a dream for a graphic designer or photographer to cut background from hair, tresses or fur in a quick succession. Before refine masked Photoshop utility, people were using third party plugins to remove backgrounds wasting days or spending a good amount to hire a freelancer for this job. In this day and age, we have step into an era of ease where everything is compact and timesaving. At present, I am going to share with you a quick and easy Photoshop CS5 video tutorial that is equally important for a normal Photoshop user likewise a professional photographer or graphic artist. I am going to remove background from afro hair professionally yet easily. So get ready to learn some useful tricks that how to refine edge or masked an image skillfully. This is a very easy and quick tutorial you don’t need to stare screen for hours. It will hardly take 4-5 minutes. So let’s get into it!
- First of all Go to Google & type “Afro Hair” & grab the image of Elisha Cuthbert mentioned in the video.
- Open image in Adobe Photoshop CS5. For quick selection press “W” select the bottom half of the image and then use Lasso tool for hair selection.
- While using Lasso tool hold shift key for adding area to the existing selection and alt key to subtract.
- After selection press Refine Edge from the property bar. A small window will pop up & it will be separated into 4 parts. First one deserves more attention that how image looks like in black, white, transparent and other colored background after editing with edge detection.
- Edge detection is the main key feature. The radius normally depends on the resolution of the photo, the more the resolution is, the higher the value is required.
- Experiment with Adjust edge. I normally use smooth and shift edge according to the hair/fur volume.
- When there is a color spilling on your object use “Decontaminate” colors option quite handy at times.
- Always use “New layer with layer mask” after getting satisfied with your settings.
- Don’t forget to use refine radius whenever you miss hair at distance. Just brush up & it adds up those fine detailed areas. If you don’t want to remove any specific area use Erase Refinement brush. Short key for both of them is “E”.
- Yes you are done just place any colorful or solid background behind your object and show off to the world.
